Organizational performance hinges on the leadership of the organization.  Developing your “bench” is a critical component of achieving the results the organization desires and for ensuring the sustainability of the organization. 

Total Performance Systems provides a cradle-to-cradle (always developing and renewing) system of leadership development.

Leadership development has 5 components:

  1. Identification and selection of future leaders
  2. Education/Training
  3. Mentoring and Coaching
  4. Job assignments
  5. Personal mastery

1.  Identification and selection

  • Performance evaluations that identify potential leaders
  • Input from senior leaders about people in the groups who are demonstrating high potential as leaders
  • Assessment – self-report and 360 degree

2.  Education and training

  • Can be brought in-house to groups
  • Identify external classes that meet developmental needs
  • Skill development

3.  Mentoring and Coaching

  • Mentoring
  • Advising/developmental relationship, with one or more senior managers
  • Provides a strategic perspective on leadership decisions
  • Can be an advancement catalyst
  • Lessons learned/avoid mistakes are conveyed
  • Coaching
  • Practical, goal-focused form of one-on-one or group learning
  • Produces self-knowledge
  • Define and support behavioral change

4.  Job Assignments

  • Provide stretch assignments in terms of role, function, or geography

  • Broader understanding of issues – start viewing issues from a tactical and strategic perspective

5.  Personal Mastery
